One thing that I don't go without on any given week is, you guessed it, Netflix. I'm a sucker for a really great stand up special, gritty TV show, or informative documentary (as long as it's about wine. kidding. but, really.) Sometimes I even enjoy those corny, Adam Sandler comedies if I've had a particularly crappy day.
Most nights, I have a glass of chilled wine in my hand but, there's something about drinking a classy. Chardonnay when you're watching Pablo Escobar murder one of his friends that he believes betrayed him, that doesn't sit quite right. That's why I created a pairing made in TV heaven: Netflix and cocktails. Your August guide to binge-watching and couch-sipping is here:
1. Ali Wong: Baby Cobra
Synopsis: Ali Wong's stand up special delves into her sexual adventures, hoarding, the rocky road to pregnancy, and why feminism is terrible.
Best paired with: Pink Grapefruit, Elderflower & Rosemary Vodka Cocktail
Synopsis: Los Angeles denizen Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) survives by scavenging and petty theft. He stumbles into a new career as a cameraman and -- armed with a camcorder and police scanner -- begins nocturnal forays across the city in search of shocking and grisly crimes. When he catches the eye of a news director who welcomes the chance to raise her station's ratings, Louis goes to increasingly greater lengths to catch the "money shot."
Best paired with: Blackberry Bramble Cocktail
3. SOMM Into the Bottle
Synopsis: Filmmaker Jason Wise examines the history of wine, including its production, the aging process and what makes some better than others.
Best paired with: Riesling
Synopsis: Narcos tells the true-life story of the growth and spread of cocaine drug cartels across the globe and attendant efforts of law enforcement to meet them head on in brutal, bloody conflict. It centers around the notorious Colombian cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar and Steve Murphy, a DEA agent sent to Colombia on a U.S. mission to capture and ultimately kill him.
Best paired with: Jalapeno Grapefruit Margarita
5. The Do Over
Synopsis: Two down-on-their-luck guys decide to fake their own deaths and start over with new identities, only to find the people they're pretending to be are in even deeper trouble.
Best paired with: Perfect Pina Colada
6. John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid
Synopsis: Armed with boyish charm and a sharp wit, the former SNL writer offers sly takes on marriage, his beef with babies and the time he met Bill Clinton.
Best paired with: Peach Moon
Let the binge-watching and the couch sipping begin! What is your favorite Netflix and cocktail pairing? Let me know in the comments.
