Earlier this month, I shared a behind the scenes look at the realities of being a lifestyle blogger. I was surprised with how well this type of content performed on the blog and I decided to make sharing these subjects more of a priority on AEE. That being said, right before I began making my business and personal goals for April, I stumbled across a blog post from a photographer praising a new-ish, smartphone App called Planogr.am. In case you have yet to download it for yourself, it is a tool designed to assist stylists, bloggers, photographers, and publishers with Instagram. It allows you to view your Instagram feed before it is published using the click and drag approach to rearrange and design the overall look to fit your aesthetic eye and branding message.
As bad as it may sound, the truth is that when I am exploring other blogger's or brand's Instagram profile for the very first time, I find that if their photos are not consistent or styled to fit together, I am much less likely to follow or engage with them. For bloggers and the like, Instagram has become a type of portfolio for drawing in new readers and clients to our websites. For many of us, it is not simply a fun hobby or spontaneous stream of weekend pictures (although it is fun!), it is a large part of our social media strategy. Knowing what our feed looks like to our followers before it is published is a huge advantage to translating the branding message that we want,
Another thing that I love about using this App is that it allows me to schedule each Instagram post and prepare a caption in advance. In case you missed my previously mentioned, behind the scenes story, 7 Things You Didn't Know About Being a Lifestyle Blogger, I spoke about how the majority of us bloggers have full-time jobs in addition to managing our blogs and social media accounts from day to day. Because of that, prior to discovering Planogr.am, it was very difficult for me to keep up with the competition and keep people engaged and heading to my blog 3-4 times a day. Additionally, I found that many times when I would post something new, I would see later that it didn't fit into the "theme" or branding message of the rest of my blog content and I would end up removing it. Thus, wasting time and growing frustrated.
Although I do add spontaneous snaps from time to time to give my readers a "behind the scenes" view, using this planning strategy on Instagram helps me lay the general ground work for the week and know what type of style fits my brand initially when taking the photos. The past few weeks, I have easily added this task into my morning routine. I take 5 to 10 minutes before heading out the door to work to add photos, write captions, and schedule the layout for the day.
The way Planogr.am is designed doesn't actually allow the App to post automatically to Instagram for you; however, you will get a pop up alert on your phone when one of your scheduled photos is ready and can simply click "post now" to copy the caption and share. The cost of this smartphone App is $6 per month for a basic plan (so, basically one french press coffee). But, if you are unsure of the practicality like I was before trying it, you can test out their 14-day free trial before purchasing anything. By the time your trial period is over, you will likely be as hooked as I was and see a difference in the aesthetic of your Instagram feed and following. Overall, I can honestly say that it has been a worthwhile investment for me. The App has assisted me in focusing on my branding message, posting consistently to draw people to the blog, and making my social media pages look the way that I've imagined.
In short, as one fan stated, Planogr.am is perfect for the aesthetically obsessed and incredibly particular content curators who have a little bit of a perfectionist complex.
Do you use Planogr.am? Are you downloading the App as we speak? Let me know what you think in the comments!
