Do you remember when you were little and would open a tiny square each day in December leading up to Christmas morning? Usually, you would find a cute, miniature chocolate inside and scarf it down, barely identifying what flavor it was, before begging to break open tomorrow's calendar square. Advent calendars have been around for as long as I can remember and always bring a smile to a child's face that is anticipating Christmas morning more than anything else in their world. But, what about us adults? We're tasked with the stress of the holidays more than anything. Buy me this, spend money on that, bring a dish here, don't forget to stop there. It can be exhausting, I'll admit.
Well, it's no secret that Sam and I don't have kids and, because we don't, we haven't really considered a Christmas Advent Calendar for the past 5 years that we've been together. But, that's all about to change. We decided this year to start a tradition of making our own Advent Calendar for the month of December. And, because we wanted to make it interesting, we didn't simply fill it with one tiny chocolate for each day (we filled it with TWENTY! - lol, just kidding). I'm not trying to look like I gobbled up a small child by the time Christmas rolls around, ya'll. While some of the days in our countdown have a few of our favorite specialty candies like salted caramels or Cabernet chocolate truffles, there are also ones that are filled with a surprise much more exciting.
The purpose behind this is to make December less stressful and a little more spontaneous. Some of these days include a hidden stash of money for a last-minute date night at our favorite restaurant, a mission to complete 1 random act of kindness within 24 hours, supplies to make a festive craft, and so much more. I've listed below, along with the directions on how to make this DIY Advent Calendar, some of the ideas that I used to put into our brown bags.
P.S. you can do this with your roommates, your parents, your siblings, and even your dog. Everyone likes a little holiday excitement.
