Reflections + Resolutions: 2014 to 2015

Hi there! I've decided that before I sign off for the year, I want to reflect on 2014 as a whole, glance through some of my favorite posts and memories, and even compile a list of some things I'd like to work toward in the coming year. I was just telling Sam over breakfast last week at our favorite little corner cafe that I think 2014 has been our best year yet {as a couple and individually}. It's truly been filled to the rim with incredible people, memories, and positive steps in my career that I'll never forget. It feels unreal to me that at this particular time last year I didn't even have a steady blog. In 2014 alone, it's become a huge part of my life that I am grateful for each and every day. I'm able to monitor my professional and personal progress through my blog in relation to my writing style, various topics, and reminding myself of specific things that I felt in that day or week.

Throughout 2014, I started my blog, our little pooch turned 2, I progressed in my current employment, decorated my home in the city with Sam, dove into interests I never thought I'd be able to accomplish {flying a small plane on my own} and, among other things, my big sister finally walked down the aisle. Overall, looking back on this past year and all of the incredible memories, I feel that I've become a more open and compassionate person, grew a greater sense of humor, and dove deeper into my professional interests and drive.

Resolutions:
Over the past few days, I've read a lot of articles about reasons why you shouldn't create resolutions for 2015 but, in my personal opinion, that feels a lot to me like telling people not to make goals because they couldn't possibly achieve them. Now, that's clearly not the way that I want to be motivated to become a better person or to take positive steps in my life. The reason why {some} people don't partake in New Year's resolutions is because they set unrealistic and unattainable goals and standards for themselves. And, let's be honest, no person in their right mind is able to achieve them {no matter how hard they work}. Losing 30 lbs in 2 weeks? Reaching a 6-figure salary at the company you're with within 1 year, when you were just hired as an intern last month? Of course you're going to be let down when it doesn't pan out. They're resolutions, not wishes.

However, when you set realistic resolutions for yourselves that are outside the standard norm of "lose x amount of pounds" or "get a promotion/large increase in salary", you can usually gain some leeway within your long-term progress. I try each year to set goals for myself that add value to my life in the long term. This can be anything from personal issues you notice in your behavior throughout the year that you'd like to work on, to helping others out in a more significant way, or something as simple as not eating in front of the television before you go to bed. It's difficult to set a standard list of resolutions for a group of people because everyone's lifestyles vary so greatly. Each of us have our own personal battles and internal goals that we'd like to work on.

Throughout 2014, some of my resolutions included challenging myself to take things more lightly, try new experiences {even if they weren't necessarily "for" me}, take a leap of faith within my professional setting, and give back to those in need around us. If I hadn't set those goals for myself I may not have tried that first flying lesson, completed my 21 Acts of Kindness Challenge, or, for heaven's sake, even started the AEE blog.

Tips for following through with the Resolutions you set:
  • Ensure that they are something you truly want/need to change in your life right now
  • Make sure they are specific, realistic, and measurable
  • Plan ahead; decide how you will deal with temptation
  • Make smaller goals to lead yourself up to the long-term goal
  • Place a time frame to measure your progress/achievement
  • Reward yourself for good behavior
  • Don't beat yourself up; do the best you can and take it one day at a time
  • Tell your spouse, friends, and/or family members so that you have added accountability
  • Remind yourself often of your resolution {place a note in your phone once a week/put a reminder on your desk}

Keep this in mind: Experts say that it takes approximately 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and 6 months for it to become part of your personality. It won't happen overnight but, if you are persistent, it will pay off in the long-run.

My Resolutions for 2015:
-Don't sweat the small stuff; embrace back-up plans

-Meditate for 5 minutes each morning {MyCalmBeat - App}
-Try at least one new experience {class, location, etc.} each month
-Return phone calls and emails more diligently
-Buy less "things"

-Put $$$ away each month to buy our 1st home
-Post more frequently to AEE blog

My loved ones' Resolutions for 2015:
-"Be less negative and more positive in general."
-"Eat more consciously and clean. Check the ingredients of what I'm eating/drinking."
-"Become a more passive/calm driver."

-"Keep better track of where my money is going."

Take a moment and reflect on 2014 as a whole. What do you believe has changed the most in this past year? What are your resolutions for 2015?

To a new year filled with fabulous moments and loving memories!

Holiday Martini Bar

Hello, everyone! As 2014 is rapidly closing in on us I've decided that we need just one more quick tutorial-based post before I sign off. As I'm sure you've all experienced by now, New Year's Eve can oftentimes be described as disappointing because the night simply never turns out as magical as expected, or deserved. However, this is no reason to skip it all together. Well... you can {and should} probably skip the whole overpriced "best night of your life {worst use of $500}, NYE in da' club" deal. Instead, host an intimate get-together at your house, no cover charge needed, and set up this fabulous martini bar.

So, save the bubbly until the ball drops and have a full bar of "make your own" simple martinis for your guests to choose from. Your guests will be encouraged to mix up a drink to their liking with Vodka {or gin}, Vermouth, "dirty water", and various garnishes {stuffed olives, sugar, lemons, and candy}.
They'll be having so much fun trying out new recipes, techniques, and combinations together that you won't even be reminded of last year's cringe-worthy NYE when you drank warm beer, rubbed up against {sweaty} strangers in an overcrowded bar, and the seriously creepy Uber driver who ripped you off after taking you guys home via the "scenic route". No worries though, we got you covered this year. Here's what you'll need:
Picture
I chose to showcase today two very popular martini recipes with my personal twist added on: an extra dirty martini and a frosted lemon drop martini. However, if you want to go the more festive route, I've included a few additional holiday martini recipes at the bottom to sink your teeth into.
Picture
Extra Dirty Martini:
-1 ounce Belvedere vodka
-1 teaspoon Dry Vermouth
-Dirty water {a.k.a olive juice}
-1/2 cup Ice
-2-3 Blue Cheese Stuffed Olives {see recipe}

-Toothpick

1. Allow your martini glasses to sit in the freezer for at least 30 minutes {for best results}.
2. Pour ice into shaker.
3. Pour a dash of vermouth over the ice.
4. Briskly shake in shaker for about 10 seconds then discard vermouth.
5. Pour the vodka into the shaker with about a spoonful of olive juice {more/less to taste}.
6. With brisk, firm shakes, shake the shaker for about 5-10 outward shakes. {Do not over-shake; martini will become watered down}

7. Strain martini into chilled glass.
8. String 2-3 blue cheese stuffed olives onto a toothpick. Gently drop toothpick into martini glass.
Enjoy!
Picture
BLUE CHEESE STUFFED OLIVES:
-1 Jar olives {pits removed}
-1 Package crumbled blue cheese

1. Stuff the olives with pieces of blue cheese using back-end of a fork {will be messy}. Soak the olives in some vermouth with a splash of the olive juice while you prepare the drink.
Picture
Frosted Lemon Drop Martini:
-1 1/2 ounces Belvedere vodka
-3/4 ounce fresh Lemon juice
-1 teaspoon Simple syrup

-Superfine sugar, for the martini glass rim
-1/2 cup Ice
-Lemon twist for garnish

-Lemon wedge for sugaring rim
-Lemon drop candies

1. Run the lemon wedge along the outer edge of the martini glass and dip glass immediately into sugar to coat rim. Chill martini glass in freezer after sugared for approximately 30 minutes.

2. Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker along with ice cubes.
3.
With brisk, firm shakes, shake the shaker for about 10-15 outward shakes. {Until ice starts to break}
4. Strain martini into chilled glass.
5. Gently drop a lemon drop candy in and garnish martini with the lemon twist.
Enjoy!
Picture

Good morning, folks! I hope you all had a very merry Christmas and Hanukkah surrounded by loved ones. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves over the past few days and participated in the various holiday festivities between 4 houses and countless family members. Today, however, I'm stuck in a strange mood because I'm at a crossroads between feeling somber that Christmas is over at last and feeling the anticipation of the approaching New Year's Day and the fresh beginning of 2015. I suppose that this weekend I will try to soak in all of the lovely memories we've created throughout this past year and await the magic of NYE to begin.

One of my New Year's resolutions {one that I've gotten a jump start on already} is to dedicate additional time to bringing new and creative blog posts to AEE. Because of this, I've been working extra hard the past few days so that this weekend can be packed full of new posts for you guys to enjoy including Reflection & Resolutions of 2014 to 2015, and a DIY Holiday Martini Bar. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, today I'm sharing with you below some fun inspiration, crafts, and recipes to get into for the coming week:

Craving this week: Vanilla Bean & Fig Shortbread Drizzled with Honey Glaze.

One of my favorite new crafts to make are these DIY Antique Teacup Candles. $1 teacup sets from the antique store, some plain wax, and a festive scent, and you're all set to give these babies as gifts for the new year! Tutorial: How to Make Teacup Candles.

Don't forget to check back this week for my post on Reflections & Resolutions from 2014 to 2015, and a quick tutorial on a DIY Holiday Martini Bar {including recipes} for your NYE soiree.

This time of year always seems to fly by so quickly and I'm determined not to let it pass by this year without a number of added memories. I've been trying to soak in all of the Christmas smells and music, embrace the chilly weather, and enjoy an adventurous morning date or two with my SO. Oliver has really been getting into the holiday spirit over the past couple days as well. He helped us put up our Christmas tree complete with his wrinkly sharpei ornament and his clay paw print from his very 1st Christmas. He even tended to my every need in the kitchen while mixing up a batch of sugar cookies to bring to his grandma's house for dinner.

I also realized this weekend that it's crazy how you can drive by something every single day and have no clue that it's there. Take, for instance, this incredible church in Mount Vernon, and a breathtaking library begun in 1860,
the George Peabody, that looks like it jumped straight out of Beauty and The Beast. These two landmarks were practically in our backyard slapping us in the face every morning and yet it took us 4 years to actually discover and explore them. Makes me think about what else I may be simply overlooking every day. Food for thought, huh? Have an awesome week and holiday, everyone!

Happy Saturday, everyone! Can you believe it? This morning's edition of Weekend Links is the last one we'll have time for before Christmas day and the last day of Hanukkah. I have to admit that I've been pretty under the weather this week and it's been rough having to interrupt my diligent study sessions in the library for finals with quick breaks to up-heave everything I had just eaten. Not to mention embarrassing, right? It figures that I would get sick when I have all of these holiday activities planned for this weekend and the following week. At least Sam has been home with me for the most part and has been able to fix me up fabulous wellness cocktails and make me breakfast {lunch and dinner} in bed. Now, that's a silver lining if I ever saw one. Seeing that our tree is up, our gifts have been wrapped, and our finals aced, we can finally kick back and enjoy a good book in our pajamas with one of these Spiced Orange Mocha Hot Chocolates {see below} by our side tomorrow. Today, however, will be filled to the rim with cookie swaps, holiday photos, and our chaotic Christmas family reunion.

And, since we're officially in the homestretch here, I've tried my best today to round up a little bit of everything you will need for the coming week including: a festive tablescape, a specialty hot chocolate, a guide to the absolute best of the Christmas cookie recipes from around the web, a twist on a classic martini, a minimalist curl technique for a quick holiday do', and more. Check it all out below:

Phew! Can you believe we already have less than 2 weeks until Christmas? I feel like Thanksgiving was just yesterday. Things have been so hectic this week that when I finally sat down to begin my gift wrapping last night, I realized that I haven't even fully completed my Christmas shopping for everyone. Not to mention that our tree isn't up yet, I haven't made this beautiful DIY Moroccan Wedding Blanket Tree Skirt {see below}, and no crispy gingerbread men have set off our smoke alarm. Am I losing it? I'd like to think not. Today is the day. I've made my list, checked it twice {ha, ha}, and I'm ready to get into the manic holiday spirit. Aside from my company party, our Christmas parties actually start next weekend, so this is truly the time to get my s**t together before it's too late.

If I had to guess, I'd say that what makes holiday parties entertaining and memorable is when someone brings out a classic board game that everyone can really get into. We proved this to be true during our hosting-gigs over the Thanksgiving holiday when we were consistently drawn to the Scrabble and Jenga sets. However, Sam and I were discussing last night while looking at some new game purchases online about what we used to do as kids with our friends to keep ourselves entertained versus what our future kids will do. At first, it was a pretty depressing comparison just thinking about how our kids will rather play games on their smartphones than sit down and play Pictionary with us. About how our kids will never know the horror of calling your crush's home phone {because there were no cell phones at the time} and having their Dad or their Mom grudgingly answer. About how we used to spend hours upon hours with our friends prank calling people we knew and even random numbers to tell them in a foreign accent that they "stepped on our dog" or that they better catch their refrigerator that was running. Sam and I were so delusional laughing on the floor with Oliver at one point that we even considered for a half-second trying to prank call someone just to relive those memories. Do you guys have any classic board games that you go back to year after year during the holiday season? What kind of things did you do to entertain yourself when you were a kid? After looking through my favorite links from around the web this week, leave us a comment in the section below!

By far one of the best articles I've read in a very long time: 10 Habits of Remarkably Polite People.

This Bridal Flower Crown is definitely one of my favorites. It would work perfectly as an unconventional wreath as well.

When we get married, can it look exactly like this?

Did you read my post this past week on the topic of "Surviving the Holiday Season"? Another blog post by the writer of The Yellow Table on "Choosing Connection, Not Perfection" also touches on the topic of how to make the most of your holiday season.

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Surviving the Holiday Season

Picture
Each year the holiday season can represent both the most fulfilling and the most stressful time of the year for each of us. We get the chance to reconnect with family and friends over fabulous food and gifts whilst in our pajamas not thinking twice about schoolwork or work in general. At the same time however, we accumulate a pile of bills, our schedules are chaotically filled with everything from mandatory family gatherings at your "favorite" Aunts' house to high school reunions at that one bar you snuck into when you were 16. Not to mention that our scale bumps up a few fluffy lbs. {to account for the cold weather, obviously}. It's all just one holiday after the last; you go from turkeys to ugly sweaters to anything covered in sequins, all in a span of 3 months. Is that necessary? Should you scarf down that last piece of pumpkin pie? Is an extra $300 for a New Years Eve dress truly high-priority when it will only sit lifeless in the back of your closet next month? I sift through these questions in my mind each and every year so I figure that most of you face similiar dilemmas as well. So, I've created a standard holiday guide for myself this year, based on previous experiences, to ensure that the following two months are as enjoyable and stress-free as possible:
1. Be Present
Not only are you getting older each year that the holidays roll around but your family members and your friends are as well. It's easy for our generation to distract ourselves with trending stories, photos, games on our phones, etc. when it seems that nothing is "entertaining" us at that particular moment. If nothing else, the one thing I want to walk away from this holiday season with is the knowledge that I spent more time interacting with my loved ones than with my smartphone. Even though you might be spending hours upon hours with the same people, it is all quality time that you can't get back later. Watch an old Christmas movie, have a face-to-face conversation with your grandmother, play a board game {I highly recommend "Catch Phrase"}. It's easy to become caught up in taking photos all night of everyone enjoying themselves but are you really having fun or are you simply experiencing the event through the lens of your Iphone? As I've felt before, at the end of the night you not only feel empty and bored by doing this but you also feel that you missed the actual experience of that particular event. Bottom line: put down the phone.

2. Dress Appropriately for the Occasion
This is especially true if you are spending the holidays with your partner's parents for the first time. I'm almost positive that Sam's family thought that I was a nun at the end of our first holiday season together. I wore thick black turtlenecks for the first few months because when he used the word "conservative" to describe them to me a loud siren alerted my wardrobe as well. When attending a partner's family function or a holiday work event, my experience has been that it is always better to overdress for the occasion than to underdress. Truly, you'd rather people think you were a wee bit too fancy than to think that you dressed like a slob. On the other hand, if you're spending the weekend at your parents or with your friends, usually a holiday sweater and a comfy pair of jeans should do the trick.

3. Budget

Although big holidays have been so commercialized in the recent years, they are not about gift-giving or receiving. The fundamentals and the purpose of these events are to cherish your family and friends and to spend time alongside each other eating good food and enjoying the company. Don't stress yourself out during the holidays spending your entire paycheck for three months straight or putting yourself in debt until next year in order to give your family and friends things that, to be perfectly honest, they probably didn't need anyway. Knowing and keeping track of your budget is key during the holiday season. Be reasonable about how you are spending your money and which events you choose to attend {know how to say "no"} in order to keep it as realistic as possible.

4. Remain Balanced
Don't use the holidays as an excuse to gain an extra 5 lbs. of fluff unless you are going to be okay with it by the end of January. I enjoy a slice {or two} of pumpkin pie as much as the next girl during the holiday season but that also means that I'm prepared to go to my yoga class the next morning and fill up on some spinach before the following group outing. By no means should you restrict yourself from a fancy holiday feast but, at least plan ahead so that it doesn't turn into a "special occasion feast" every night for the next 3 months. Take a walk with your sibling, grab a green smoothie, and just balance it all out.

5. Be a Responsible Role Model
I'm assuming that if you are spending the holidays with your family, there will be children around because that's the way it is in our household. Whether you realize it or not, they look up to you and are carefully watching your every move, good or bad. It is not your opportunity to get hammered and go for the car keys with your little cousins watching {or at all for that matter}. This also goes back to number 1; if you think our generation is attached to our phones, you should see the statistics of the generation below us. Show them that, in fact, it is not cool to be on your phone scrolling through what's "trending" on Twitter and ignoring Grandma's funny jokes. You should behave as a role model all the time, but especially throughout the cheerful holiday season, so that they get a sense of what is appropriate behavior during the holidays {and in general}.
